The CGT, Solidaires and CNT-SO unions are calling for a strike throughout France on Tuesday, February 5.
European Secretariat of the International Workers’ League-Fourth International (IWL-FI)
The “Assembly of Assemblies” of the Yellow Vests, that met in Commercy on January 26-27 (see their appeal published below), has given its support to the strike, not for a day of isolated mobilisation, but for a general and indefinite strike, controlled by the strikers themselves (“renewable”). A strike that would block the economy, defeat Macron and fight for their demands. The union Solidaires has called for the same struggle: for a general strike, that is renewable, in unity with the Yellow Vests.
The strike on February 5 allows a great step forward in the necessary unity between the Yellow Vests and the organised labour movement in order to defeat the policy of the union bureaucracies. A policy to prevent the confluence between the Yellow Vests and the workers of the factories.
The strike must be a resounding response to the brutal repression of Macron and his government, to his brazen lies and fraudulent manoeuvres, such as the great propaganda operation called the “great national debate.” It must be a response to the European Union and its governments, which are the supporters of Macron.
We are with the French workers who demand “the immediate increase of wages, subsidies and pensions; the unconditional right to housing, health, education, to public services and free for all” (Assembly of Commercy Assemblies).
We condemn the criminalisation of the protests and demand the end of the savage police violence against the demonstrators and the withdrawal of the “anti-casseur” law, that can prohibit demonstrations.
We repudiate the violent actions of fascist groups such as that suffered by the NPA militants.
We demand amnesty for all sentenced Yellow Vests.
With the French workers, we demand Down with Macron!
We call, as the Commercy manifesto says, that “committees be formed in the places of work, of study and in all places so that this strike can be built on the basis of the strikers themselves.” Let us take our affairs in our hands! ”
The European organisations of the IWL-FI call on the labour movement to promote international solidarity with the strike in the different countries, through acts of solidarity and pickets at embassies and consulates.
The fight of our French brothers and sisters is the struggle of everyone against the big bosses, the governments of the EU and the EU itself, which is the Europe of Capital. It is the struggle of all for a Europe of Workers and peoples.
Appeal of the first “Assembly of Assemblies” of Yellow Vests (Commercy, 26 and 27 January 2019)
We, Yellow vests of the roundabouts, parking lots, squares, assemblies and demonstrations, we have met this 26 and January 27, 2019 in the “Assembly of Assemblies” , grouping one hundred delegations that responded to the call of the yellow vests of Commercy.
Since November 17, from the smallest town, from the rural world to the largest city, we have risen up against this deeply violent, unjust and unbearable society. We will not let ourselves be stepped on! We rebel against the expensive life, the precariousness and the misery. We want our loved ones, our families and our children to live with dignity. 26 billionaires own as much as half of humanity. It is unacceptable. Let’s share the wealth and not the misery! Let’s end social inequalities! We demand the immediate increase of salaries, social assistance, subsidies and pensions, the unconditional right to housing and health, education, free public services and for all!
It is for all these rights that we occupy the roundabouts every day, that we organize actions, demonstrations and we discuss everywhere. With our yellow vests, which we have never had, we take up the word again.
And what is the government’s response? Repression, contempt, humiliation. Dead and thousands of wounded, the massive use of mutilating guns, bursts eyes, injures and traumatizes. More than 1,000 people have been arbitrarily sentenced and imprisoned. And now the new law called “anti-casseur” [“anti- vandals “] is simply to prevent us from demonstrating. We condemn all violence against protesters that comes from law enforcement or violent groups. None of this will stop us! Manifesting is a fundamental right. End of police impunity! Amnesty for all the victims of repression!
What a fraud of “great national debate”, which is really a government communication campaign, which instrumentalizes our will to debate and decide! The true democracy we practice in our assemblies, in our roundabouts, is neither on the television sets nor in the false round tables organized by Macron.
After having insulted and belittled us, they now present us as a crowd full of fascist and xenophobic hatred. But we are the opposite: neither racist, nor sexist, nor homophobic, we are proud to be together with our differences to build a supportive society.
We are strong in the diversity of our discussions, at this very moment hundreds of assemblies are elaborating and proposing their own demands. They affect real democracy, social and fiscal justice, working conditions, ecological and climatic justice and the end of discrimination. Among the most debated strategic claims and proposals, we find: the eradication of poverty in all its forms, the transformation of institutions (RIC, constituent, end of the privileges of the elected …), the ecological transition (energy precariousness, industrial pollution ) …), equality and the consideration of everyone, regardless of nationality (people with disabilities, equality between men and women, the end of the abandonment of popular neighborhoods,
We, Yellow Vests, invite everyone with their means, as much as possible, to join us. We call to continue the acts (act 12 against police violence before the police stations, acts 13, 14 …), to continue the occupations of the roundabouts and the blockade of the economy, to build a massive and recoverable strike from the February 5th. We ask that committees be set up in the places of work, study and in all places so that this strike can be built on the basis of the strikers themselves. Let’s take our affairs in our hands! Do not stay alone, join us!
Let’s organize ourselves democratically, autonomously and independently! This assembly of assemblies is an important stage that allows us to discuss our demands and our means of action. Let’s empower ourselves to transform society!
We propose the whole of the Yellow Vests to circulate this call. If, as a group you see it convenient, send your signature to Commercy (email@example.com). Do not hesitate to discuss and formulate proposals for the next “Assemblies of the Assemblies” that we will prepare in the future.
Macron resignation! Live power to the people, for the people and for the people.
Appeal proposed by the Assemblies of Commercy Assemblies. Which is then presented for adoption at each local assembly.
