The following article was published in the Socialist Voice. No 36 (September/October).
It has been 50 years since the stonewall riots took place, for LGBT+ people around the world it has been very uneven progress.
Many countries, particularly the rich countries of Europe and North America have seen massive progress while other poorer (and sometimes not poorer) countries such as those in Africa, the Middle East and Asia etc. have seen far less progress. Some countries such as Russia have seen a reversal of previous progress in recent years.
Worldwide, violence against LGBT+ communities is rising due to economic chaos pushing people, from fear, into the arms of bigoted politicians and groups.
For example, according to the National Survey of Sexual Attitude and Lifestyles acceptance of UK LGBT+ people has stalled for the first time since 2010. The increase in recent years of violent and non-violent attacks on UK LGBT+ people confirms the study’s conclusion.
It is no coincidence that homophobia is increasing at a time when capitalism worldwide, continues to drown in crisis.
Like racism, sexism and xenophobia oppression of social groups is used by capitalism to divide and conquer.
For this reason, the struggle against homophobia and all oppressions need to unite with the wider workers’ struggle.
We must not fight only for the specific rights of LGBT+ people but also for better living and working conditions for all against austerity, better healthcare, housing and education. It is not possible to have an
equal social place in an economically and socially unequal world, we must fight for a world built on the principle of equality for all and the end of all oppression.
Make no mistake our greatest enemy is capitalism, they may state they are LGBT+ peoples allies, but when they push forward even crueller austerity, attack workers’ rights of attack other oppressed peoples LGBT+ people suffer.
There is much LGBT+ people can do through militant struggle but the ultimate aim must be tearing down the capitalist system and the building of a new system across the world which has equality for all and the end of all oppression woven into its very foundations.
UK LGBT+ people protect and expand your rights!
Unite with workers and other oppressed peoples!
Equality for all, end of all oppression!
Tear down the capitalist system!
